Community and Practice is a consulting firm proficient in
community-engaged engineering.
Whether Community and Practice is collaborating with grassroots organizations or institutional stakeholders, our approach centers on co-developing solutions. People are at the forefront of all our efforts.
We work across a range of complex problems such as, coastal resilience, innovation adoption, nutrient management, policy objectives, infrastructure investment, and climate adaptation.
Therefore, our resources support audiences such as policymakers, the business community, academics, government agencies, and the public.
-
We’ll begin with a scoping process to understand community’s context and the consultation's position within that context. Then, the world is our oyster! We can move forward with stakeholder engagement and co-creative research efforts that provide a lot of latitude to mix and match activities that fit the needs at hand. A portfolio of community-based activities (e.g., systems modeling, focused research) will help us to identify important factors, dynamics, and strategies for addressing complex challenges.
-
We will collaboratively identify the audience and key features necessary for building education and outreach plans and materials. To do this, we will leverage my depth of technical expertise, interdisciplinary network, background in curriculum development, and track record in workshop facilitation.
-
As public policies seek to address increasingly complex and technical matters, there is a clear need for informed engagement from those in various technical spheres as well as those from the communities most impacted. However, training on effective engagement with policymakers is fairly uncommon. C&P will provide participants with the training and resources necessary to effectively engage in the policymaking process - the name of the game is using the right tool with the right person for the right job! We will map the policy ecosystem, identify and prioritize relevant stakeholders, and build plans for ranges of engagement efforts.

This portfolio of offerings focuses on improving an organization’s programmatic performance. Therefore, a systems approach is a helpful and engaging way to begin because it guides clients in identifying important factors, dynamics, leverage points, and bottlenecks that impact their organization’s ability to achieve performance goals. The activity considers existing key performance indicators and builds consensus on whether new KPIs are useful. From this standpoint, we collaboratively work through the organization’s short- and long-term approach to achieving their goals with the systemic insights we’ve uncovered. When helpful, C&P also identifies new funding sources and supports targeted efforts with project management and grant writing.
